  • 2010-06-16
From 21st to 23rd of May PMR Research participated, as sponsor, in the 6th Data Analysis Workshop at Rudki near Nowa Słupia. The event was organised by dr Jolanta Perek-Białas together with a group of Warsaw Business School and the Jagiellonian University students. We met to present advanced data analysis techniques and ways to apply them in social and marketing research. This year we focused on discriminant analysis, a technique used to identify and classify observation groups. The purpose of discriminant analysis is to study differences between two or more groups, based on several variables. This method is successfully used to perform segmentation, predict what buying decision customers make, or study customer loyalty.

At the workshop, the students – with the help of the speakers – had a chance to test their knowledge. The event was a perfect opportunity to understand the nuances of discriminant analysis and see how to practically apply this method.

The Data Analysis Workshop was not only a set of lectures and practical exercises but also a chance for the students to meet, share their experiences and make new friends.

  • An interview with Maciej Noworyta – schoolboy and founder of SwiatGry.pl   click here »
  • 2010-03-22  Richard Lucas
Maciej Noworyta is the founder of www.SwiatGry.pl and won a school entrepreneurship competition at The Marie Skłodowska-Curie high school in Skawina, Poland in February 2010. Twelve pupils with exceptional extra curricular contributions to school and local life were asked by their entrepreneurship teacher Barbara Werner to present their “plan for the future” to a panel of 5 judges. The panel of judges, of which I was a member, decided which plan was the best.

Among the criteria we used the most important were:

    1. Degree of initiative (better to considering starting/doing something new than simply working for someone else)
    2. Realism. Any signs of awareness of the challenges and difficulties that would have to be overcome were viewed positively
    3. Communication skills and persuasiveness

We all agreed that Maciej Noworyta was the clear winner. This interview by e-mail is to both promote his success to wider audience and to make him an example to inspire other would-be entrepreneurs, as part of my work promoting youth entrepreneurship.

RL Please describe how you came to be the founder of www.SwiatGry.pl . What motivated you to start the site?
MN I have been interested in computers since I was a child. I used to spend a lot of time playing computer games and at some point I realized that I could turn it into something like a hobby, something creative and interactive with other people.

RL Please give some numbers to describe how popular your web site is, and how much time you spend on the site every week.
MN On average, there are about 35.000 page views and 9000 visitors per day. I usually spend several hours per week on the site.

RL What do you do to make sure that your site is visible in Google and other search engines?
MN My site is regularly positioned by Performance.com.pl

RL There are many people, young and old, who start hobby web sites. What was it that you did differently that made your site successful?
MN It was a gradual process. I introduced some new modifications to facilitate using the site so that visitors would enjoy it.

RL What personal characteristics do you have that you would you say were most important in making a success of your web site?
MN I do not want to boast, but I am rather a hard-working, patient and creative person. I also have a lot of endurance.

RL What inspired you to go ahead with the project? Was it family, friends, teachers or something else?
MN  I was inspired mainly by the willingness to get to know something new and promising. and to educate myself about it. My nearest relatives also motivated me a lot.

RL You’ve attracted sponsorship and advertising from major companies. Was it easy for you to negotiate and deal with them? Did they realise you are still at school?
MN  I think it does not matter how old you are. What really counts is what you can offer and with what you can attract potential sponsors.

RL What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned as a result of this project?
MN  Regularity and making a good, cohesive organization. And by the way I gained much experience during the process of creating such a serious project.

RL Did anyone treat you unfairly or badly in the course of your project? How did you deal with it?
MN Generally we work in friendly atmosphere. I strive for a perfect atmosphere where there are no conflicts at all. It helps in accomplishing tasks and ensures that everything goes in its proper direction.

RL You mentioned that the site is more of a hobby than a business - do you believe that sites such as yours can be profitable or does making money out of a site make it less attractive to visitors?
MN  I believe that not everyone who starts from scratch aims to earn money out of it. Of course, for the site to function we need some funds. However, thanks to people who work with me, we can make our hopes come true. I am sure that earning money will not negatively influence our work. Just the opposite – it will help in developing the site faster and any other ideas which are going to be consecutively introduced will let us implement some innovations.

RL What advice would you give to someone of your age or younger who is considering a similar project, or starting their own business?
MN Much patience and singleness of purpose.

RL You mentioned that you want to start a web page design business, and that you have already done web pages for some companies. How do you intend to compete with the many other companies that are active in this area already?
MN The two important things are professionalism and the way of presenting your work. I do not like being formulaic. This is why I am trying to create something which is worth people’s attention.

RL Were there any remarkable memories when you realised that your site was going to be successful? How did you feel?
MN I just felt satisfaction. But it is worth noting that the site is not only the effect of my effort but also our editors’.

RL Have your family, friends and school been supportive of your business ideas, or do you feel under some social pressure to do a “normal” job?
MN  Sometimes they were trying to back me up or at least not to disturb. I do not feel under pressure to do some other, more common job.

RL If you are successful (as I am sure you will be) and make a good income out of your first business will you start other businesses, or take time off relax and have fun?
MN If what I am working on thrives and goes as planned, then for sure I won’t refuse a long rest for myself.

Thanks again and congratulations. For an excellent 3-minute summary of the secrets of success visit Richard St John inspiring TED speech here. TEDx is coming to Krakow

PMR gave again its contribution to the Global Entrepreneurship Week which took place in Poland.
This time PMR representatives visited children in Primary School number 72 in Krakow providing them with a special lesson of business making. Richard Lucas, the chairman of PMR present at the event, shared with the pupils his own experience as a successful enterpreneur, encouraging them to try to become one.

Undoubtedly, it was a great opportunity for the seven-year-olds to get some new skills like speaking in public or taking part in mini-brainstorming on the subject of setting up a store of their choice.
PMR’s main goal was to inspire the children to express their ideas as far as planning business activity is concerned, including:
    • choosing a perfect localisation for the store,
    • decision making on the assortment,
    • creating an advertising poster.
The whole time a group of PMR employees was there to support and help children in carrying the task and presenting their business plans at the end.

To conclude, Marek Lorek, sales consultant and a magician, gave a special magic performance for the participants, showing that they are capable of everything they want, even learning some magic tricks.

For the first time Poland participated in Global Entrepreneurship Week - and so did PMR!

Richard Lucas, the chairman of PMR, often referred to as a “business guru”, delivered lectures on the subject of starting an enterprise in at conferences and other events associated with GEW.

Our company also hosted a group of seven-year-old children from a Polish primary school. The children had the opportunity to talk to PMR managers, and to ask and learn about distant places, new information and business. For example, in order to explain market needs to the pupils we carried out a survey among them on the subject of… their favourite flavour of ice-cream! – as you can imagine this was well-received.

As we tend to make them as practical as possible, such visits seem to be a great experience for that age group, and, at the same time, it furthers many educational objectives. This time, for example, the children learned:

    • how to say their name in different languages, such as English, French, Italian, German and Russian
    • how to market their school among their peers – this task was also a first trial/experience of brainstorming and speaking in public for many of them.
Last but not least, we had a pleasant surprise for the children – a magic show performed by our sales consultant, Marek Lorek.
Both sides, children and PMR, found this trip very fruitful and it was really hard to say goodbye.

Since PMR's policy has always been to be close to people, also this October PMR participated in the Work Fair at the University of Economics. There were people looking for full-time position as well as students interested in internships. We met dozens of interesting people, gathered loads of resumes and invited many interested people to visit our website. Some of the candidates have already been at interviews at Supniewskiego, fa ew of them will join PMR team really soon. Summing up, our participation in such events seems to be very successful for PMR!
Generally, work fairs correspond well with our CSR and Company Values, while providing us with the opportunity to find out more about job seekers: graduates and professionals, and also give work-fair visitors the chance to get to know us better. We highly respect people interested in our business, so you can always expect to meet a friendly team of managers or experienced specialists well prepared to talk to you about PMR, our business, career opportunities and stages of the recruitment process.

As part of the 50/50 CSR and recruitment action, on 17 July PMR joined international AIESEC trainees on the boat that took us to the trip along the Vistula River. Those who experienced it for the first time had a chance to see how our beautiful city looks like from the side of water, but also spend nice time chatting with the trainees, exchanging opinions and finding out about their views on first professional steps, Polish cities, people, cuisine, etc. Our aim there was, firstly, to spend nice time, and secondly to show the AIESEC trainees PMR way of work, explaining our priorities and values. Looks like we succeeded in making them interested – after the event I got CVs of some interesting candidates, maybe not to be employed today but at some point of our and their development for sure.

On 21 May we had another school visit. This time the challenge was even bigger: the children were between 3 and 4 years of age!!! This was a pilot visit to see whether children from pre-schools can have a successful company visit in the run up to Global Entrepreneurship Week that is taking place in November (Poland is part of GEW for the first time this year). The experiment was very successful. The kids did a walk across all numerous rooms of PMR location at Supniewskiego, listened to funny stories about what the specialists in each department do, experienced seating behind the desk with two computers and... counted our stairs :) Preschoolers had also the opportunity to play sell-and-buy game with senior managers in PMR and it looked like both sides were happy about it.

On 3 April PMR participated in the Enterprise Day organized by Fundacja Młodzieżowej Przedsiębiorczości, a foundation modelled on the US Junior Achievement and 's Young Enterprise programs. Our company was visited by seven teenagers from two high schools, three of them motivated enough to come to us from Jastrzębie Zdrój! The main objective of the program was to help young people to understand how medium-sized, international companies (like PMR) are working, to give them an insight into economy and business by sharing our experience, and of course to inspire their desire for enterprise! So apart from a tour around the company and presentation of PMR prepared by Richard, our guests had some practical exercises concerning sales and marketing.

AIESEC Reception Weekend was a great chance for us to meet an international team of interns working currently in . In order to give them an opportunity to know PMR better, we met them in their hostel and during the short presentation held by Richard Lucas (the Chairman of our company), we made them aware of what kind of company we are, who PMR team are, what candidates we can be looking for, etc. The presentation ended up with a friendly chat and we all moved to Midgard pub to socialize together. We spent great time talking, getting interesting views of distant cultures, and dancing. It seems to be also the opinion of the interns, since we got a number of work and internship applications after that:)
